This isn’t your average margarita. These Cherry Limeade Margaritas are bold, sweet-tart, and incredibly refreshing — the perfect summer drink that feels like a cross between your favorite childhood Sonic drink and your favorite adult cocktail. You’ll make a quick cherry simple syrup that adds rich color and a naturally sweet twist, then balance it out with fresh lime juice, tequila, and a fizzy lime seltzer topper. It’s a crowd-pleasing drink that’s ridiculously easy to make and even easier to sip.
Whether you’re hosting a backyard BBQ, lounging poolside, or just need a Friday night cocktail, this one delivers every time — no mix required, no weird ingredients, and totally customizable.
This recipe is inspired by my Spicy Pineapple Habanero Margarita recipe.
Ingredients
For the cherry simple syrup (makes enough for 4+ margaritas):
- 1 cup fresh or frozen pitted cherries
- ½ cup white sugar
- 2 tbsp water
For 2 margaritas:
- 2 shots (3 oz) tequila
- 1.75 oz orange liqueur (Triple Sec or Grand Marnier)
- 2 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
- 2 oz cherry simple syrup (or cherry juice)
- Ice
- Lime seltzer water, to top
- Optional garnishes: Tajín for the rim, fresh lime wedge, or cherry
Instructions
1. Make the cherry simple syrup:
In a small saucepan, combine pitted cherries, white sugar, and water. Simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, for 10–12 minutes, or until the cherries begin to break down and the syrup thickens slightly. Once done, strain the syrup through a fine mesh sieve, pressing gently to extract all that cherry goodness. Let cool before using. You can store leftovers in the fridge for up to a week.

2. Mix the margaritas:
In a cocktail shaker, combine tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and cherry syrup. Add ice and shake vigorously for 15 seconds until the drink is cold and well mixed.

3. Serve it up:
Rim your glasses with lime juice and dip in Tajín for that classic salty-spicy kick (optional, but so good). Fill the glasses with ice, pour your margarita mix over, then top off with a splash of lime seltzer for fizz. Garnish with a cherry or lime wedge and enjoy immediately.

FAQs
Can I use frozen cherries?
Yes! Frozen pitted cherries work perfectly and break down quickly in the syrup. No need to thaw first.
Can I make it a mocktail?
Absolutely. Skip the tequila and liqueur. Use cherry syrup, lime juice, and top with lime seltzer or Sprite for a fizzy cherry limeade.
Can I batch this for a party?
Yes — just multiply all the ingredients by 4, 6, or more. Mix everything except the seltzer in a pitcher ahead of time. Store in the fridge and top with seltzer just before serving.
What’s the best tequila for this?
A blanco (silver) tequila works best for a fresh, citrus-forward drink. Use what you love — Don Julio, Espolòn, or even Costco’s Kirkland brand are great picks.
Is Tajín necessary for the rim?
Not at all — you can do salt, sugar, or nothing. But Tajín adds a chili-lime flavor that complements the cherry-lime combo beautifully.
With their bright color, bold cherry flavor, and perfect hit of lime, these Cherry Limeade Margaritas are about to become your go-to cocktail. Sweet, tart, and totally refreshing — this is summer in a glass.
