Do you like Whatabuger patty melts and adore Cane’s sauce? What if I told you there was a way to combine both? I a talking about a delicious cheesy patty melt with a tangy sauce that pairs almost better than with chicken tenders in my opinion! This fun combo started out as a fun fusion but I loved it so much, I made it into an official recipe!

First, caramelize your onions. I like to thinly slice my onions and add to a skillet with a 50/50 combo of butter and olive oil. Some people will add a tsp of sugar. I personally do not do this, but you can. I find a little salt is all you need. Cook your onions on medium heat. This may take a minute to get them nice and cooked down. Set aside.

This recipe is so easy to make that you only need a few ingredients! For the actual sandwich, get yourself some ground beef of your choice and make thin patties. I like to make mine square to make them like Whataburger’s patties!
You can cook these in a nonstick or a cast iron. I like the cast iron because it gets hotter and I can get a slight char on the ends. Season your patties with some salt and pepper and add to your oiled heated skillet. Cook each side 4-5 minutes each. If you want it more well done, cook or longer or also gently press the patty down with a spatula.

On the raw side that is still up, I like to put a bit of mustard on the patty and then cook it. The mustard is totally optional but I find it only adds a layer of flavor. Some fast food restaurants will smash their burgers with mustard on the grill. When your patties are almost done, add your pepper jack cheese and let it melt.

For your sauce, I replicated the Raising Cane’s sauce. You can find the full recipe and instructions here: https://saucedupfoods.com/the-best-copy-cat-raising-canes-sauce-ever/
Lastly, toast your Texas toast and add your Cane’s Spread. Top with your cheesy patty, onions, cheesy patty, and more sauce! Enjoy!
